We’ve had a rough couple of months…to say the least.
- The U.S. Census Bureau recently reported that a third of Americans show signs of clinical depression and anxiety. These and other mental conditions are becoming amplified during the pandemic, with COVID-19 patients and their families being high risk candidates to develop depression and anxiety.
- More than 48 million Americans have claimed unemployment in just the past 15 weeks.
- Parents and other caregivers have had to adapt their child care routines to closed schools, shuttered daycares and transformed workplaces. Many are now balancing two full time “jobs.”
- Not to mention the medical and clinical hurdles that hundreds of thousands of people and families across the country are facing.
As we stare into this abyss of massive change and disruption in our lives, have you taken the time to “put the oxygen mask on” yourself first?
When the world is crashing down around you, and you still want to be the best version of yourself for the ones you love…are you putting your self-care first?
Let me be really clear: self-care is not a self-distracting drink after work / day at the spa / piece of chocolate. These are temporary things and distractions that our society has come to associate with “self-care.”
Self-care is the gritty, hard work of digging deep, getting honest, and doing the work to face ourselves and the things we need to do to preserve our health and well-being.
And it’s not easy. You’ve heard it before, but it applies here too: if it were easy, everybody would be doing it.
So many of you think you’re participating in self-care when, in fact, you’re indulging in unhealthy behaviors that are just distracting you from the stress / anger / depression / anxiety that is consuming you.
Self-care isn’t a worldly, consumeristic, luxurious distraction.
It’s the necessary work, routines, and habits that will start to chisel away at the core unhappiness and unhealthy habits that you have developed over time.
Self-care is:
- Knowing who you are, recognizing your limits, and finding peace in saying “no” to a lot of outside influences.
- Finding the habits and rituals that work best for you to decompress at the beginning or end of your day, so there is no accumulation of stress
- Filling your body with nutrients and good-for-you meals instead of intoxicants
- Having the tools and resources in your back pocket to respond to unmanageable situations that inevitably pop up throughout the week.
- Taking time out of every day to focus on your soul’s voice and journey to better connect with your core desired feelings.
But where or how do you even know where to start to learn how to do this?
You are 100% responsible for your health and wellness. So the first step is recognizing that. Then choosing to move beyond excuses and find a path to true self-care.
