By now you’ve been inside a grocery store during this generational pandemic to see a new normal: no meat, no toilet paper, no canned foods, and a couple aisles with processed options like chips, crackers, cereals, etc.
But one thing that is still pretty much flowing abundant (at least in my neck of the woods and at a farmers market near you)…the produce section.
And that, my friend, is a gigantic blessing from mother Earth for your body right now.
Eating nourishing foods rich in certain vitamins can help your immune system prevent and even treat infectious diseases – something we are all concerned with at this very moment.
And the king of all immunity vitamins…the one that will support a kick ass immune system…Vitamin C!
Vitamin C benefits include protection against immune system deficiencies, cardiovascular disease, prenatal health problems, and a few other diseases. In fact, a lack of Vitamin C can even make you more prone to getting sick.
Foods rich in Vitamin C include:
- Oranges
- Tangerines
- Grapefruits
- Strawberries
- Spinach
- Bell Peppers
- Asparagus
- Broccoli
- Kale
Vitamin C has numerous functions inside your beautiful human body, including acting as an essential cofactor in enzymatic reactions. What does that even mean? Well, it is a key player in helping your body’s production of collagen, carnitine (which helps your body turn fat into energy), and catecholamines (hormones made by your adrenal glands).
Something important to really keep in mind: your body doesn’t naturally produce or store Vitamin C. Therefore daily intake of this powerhouse micro-nutrient is important – especially when you’re ill and your levels may be depleted.
But the truth is, unless you consume a shit load of fruits and vegetables (yes, I said shit load because this is important), which 90% of Americans do not, you’re falling short on the amount of Vitamin C needed to support your immune system. That’s why supplementing with a high-quality Vitamin C like Lypo-Spheric Vitamin C is ideal 1 – 2 times a day.
While the current recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for Vitamin C is around 75-90 mg a day for adult men and women, Paul Right, a physical chemist and peace activist, advocates for at least 1000 mg or even higher a day to support and BOOST your immune system.
That’s right…more is better for you in a time when our immune systems are on HIGH alert with a world spread of an incredibly contagious virus.
Studies have even shown that higher blood levels of Vitamin C may be the ideal nutrient marker for overall health!
If you’re not a fan of supplementing, it’s suggested that you do the heavy lifting to get at least a total of 9 servings of fruits and vegetables daily. Beyond just peeling those oranges and getting those greens ins, there are other ways of adding natural Vitamin C into your diet:
- Top your salads with a squeeze of lemon or lime
- Squeeze any citrus fruit into a cup of water or tea
- Add to your lunch with a nice side of crudité. Raw broccoli, red peppers, carrots, and celery.
- Be adventurous and try fermented vegetables. One serving of kimchi (a traditional Korean recipe made of fermented cabbage) can provide around half of your recommended daily value of vitamin C. Sauerkraut is a good option as well!
