I talk a lot about shit.
I ask my friends about their shit.n
I consistently track my clients’ shit.
Shit is a part of my daily life and one of my favorite things to talk about.
For those getting squeamish and think that my potty mouth is becoming too much for you, I’m of course talking about poop. Everyone poops – so why are we so afraid to talk about it?
Let’s talk about shit, shall we?
Your bowels…your poop…number two…your shit…however you choose to say it, actually says a lot about your gut, physical wellbeing, and health. You just need to take the time to slow down and pay attention to it.
Traditionally when people talk about health they focus on diet, nutrition, hydration, and exercise. Where there isn’t a lot of focus is the end of the digestive process, the poop.
Epic poop equals epic health.
And an Epic Gut equals epic poop!
Epic Health Starts in the Gut
Wellness conversations happening across the country have recently (over the past year or so) been dominated by gut health. Physicians, nutritionists, and wellness advocates have really ramped up research and exploration around digestive health and the marketplace is responding.
Consumers like never before are seeking gut-healthy foods and recipes, gut microbiome resources (the collection of bacteria and other microscopic living things that live in our intestines and digestive system), and gut cleanses that remove toxins from the body and possibly reveal food allergies that have gone unnoticed for too long.
Even more important to note is that scientific research is now indicating the 80 to 90 percent of health related diseases start in the gut. Did you know that 80 percent of your immune system resides in the gut?
Therefore it should come as no surprise that many chronic metabolic diseases are believed to begin in the gut, and long-term inflammation is thought to be a driving force.
Let’s get back to talking about the shit, shall we?
Consistency, Color and Smell
Your poop (and its size, shape, color, texture, consistency, and frequency) is one of the most visible biomarkers of your gastrointestinal and overall health. According to Cedars-Sinai, there are three things to start observing about your poop to evaluate a healthy bowel: consistency, color and smell.
- Consistency: healthy poop should be overall solid and not loose. Soft consistencies like mashed potatoes or gravy are not normal.
- Color: healthy poop is generally most shades of brown but can also be greenish-brown in color. Black poop is not normal and could indicate decomposed blood which can be serious. Also, if you are taking iron or stomach aids this may contribute to black poop.
- Smell: We all know that poop isn’t, let’s say, pleasant. However, if your poop smells “extremely foul” this can be a sign of malabsorption or maldigestion.
If you happen to notice a dramatic change in the consistency, color, and smell of your daily poo, it might be wise to have a chat with a health care practitioner about your digestive health.
Are You Tired of Feeling Like Shit?
So we’ve talked a lot about shit today, but now I want to ask you a question…are you tired of feeling like shit?
When’s the last time you felt great? Like, boundless energy, not-exhausted, gut-happy great?
Are you pooping 2 to 3 times a day? Does your poop’s consistency, color, and smell line up to the healthy guidelines I gave above?
If not, it’s probably time to consider examining what you are putting into your body and shift focus to supporting your gut health.
