A self-care routine is self-discipline in motion, and it’s a foundation on which your self-love will thrive.
Last month, we learned that a self-care routine is a necessity for women.
Why?
Because our beliefs are shaped by our behaviors. The way we shake up stagnant belief systems that don’t serve us is through small changes in our behavior. We change our behavior through our daily choices and acts of self-love, no matter how seemingly big or small.
February is often thought of as the month of love. Self-love is THE #1 love of your life. Because if you don’t love yourself, if you don’t show up for yourself, and if you don’t embrace loving disciplines, then you lack self-respect.
And if you lack self-respect… how do you think others will treat you?
A self-care routine says: I’m worthy.
When we are disciplined in an area of our life (relationships, business, work, school, health, etc.), the core of this self-discipline is the belief that you are worth it.
- You are worthy of financial freedom
- You are worthy of that promotion
- You are worthy of raising your children (human and otherwise)
- You are worthy of optimal health
- You are worthy of love
Self-discipline also boils down to self-trust. When you follow through on something instead of making an excuse, you build trust in yourself.
How do we form self-disciplines that best serve our unique needs, dreams, and desires?
By making sure our actions and our words align. By understanding that embracing challenges now will give our future selves a better quality of life. And by developing a self-care routine.
What gets in the way of self-discipline?
Mastering self-discipline leads to self-respect. One thing I see often that prevents women from self-care habits is the want for immediate gratification vs. the delay for something better.
For example, I am planning an EPIC vacation to Hawaii later this year. Because of this goal, I need to set aside a certain amount of money each month. I cannot use that money for impulse buys before my trip. I have to be disciplined about putting this money into my savings account (delayed) instead of spending it on something I want right now (immediate gratification).
The other setbacks for self-care are:
- Limiting beliefs (I am not worthy)
- Excuses for time or resources (I don’t have the time or money)
This is why your mindset has to change in order to embrace self-discipline.
A mindset to embrace a self-care routine.
Your mindset has to shift first to set in motion the act of self-discipline, which allows us to show up for our self-care, which leads to greater self-love and self-respect. It all begins with your mindset.
- Get curious about your beliefs and blocks surrounding self-care. What is truly preventing you?
- What do you want for your future self?
- Embrace a positive way of feeling and being around that discipline.
- Determine the behaviors, the small goals, and the baby steps required to take action around your self-care.
Following the example I gave above: I got curious about my desire to travel. I determined what I wanted for my future self, which is to have the finances and the physical health to travel. Then I figured out a financial plan and a health plan through small, actionable steps that will set me up for success on an EPIC vacation later this year.
